How can regulatory tools help us ?

Here is a summary table of the existing regulatory tools which affect the marine space and which are useful to know about when thinking about any marine spatial planning.

These include everything from the Maritime Transport Act (1994),

the Fisheries Act (1996),

the Marine Reserves Act (1971),

the Marine Mammals Protection Act (1978)

to the Resource Management Act (1991).

In the past, Special Legislation has also been used to achieve the goals of the community eg in Fiordland with the Fiordland (Te Moana o Atawhenua) Marine Management Act (2005).
